Amazon Watch

Amazon Watch and Ecuadorian land protectors demand an exit from oil and crude in the Amazon Basin! I created these Instagram cards as a part of AW’s campaign, shining a light on the exploitation of the jungle by narcotraffickers and big business and the Indigenous activists endangering their own lives to resist them.

Bright yellow is a warning, like the skin of a jungle frog. Here I make a literal link between California’s oil consumption and Ecuador’s exploitation.

To illustrate their importance in the fight to save the rainforest from being carved up by big business and narcotraffickers, I centered our Indigenous activist in the frame. Using organic green and yellow shapes, I evoke a map of a divided jungle from above and gold nuggets - drawing parallels to the first extractors of South America, the Spanish conquistadors, who hoped to find a city of gold in the ‘New World.’

This card is meant to look like a quick and dirty polaroid, snapped clandestinely at the scene of the oil company’s crime. It looks like evidence.
